Additional Requirements for EC Certification

For those students who wish to add EC certification (0-8 years) to their existing cross-categorical license, the following requirements are in effect:

  • Expansion of the existing portfolio in Standards 2, 4 and 8 to demonstrate competencies addressing the 0-8 year old range. The cost for this advisement will be $250.
  • A 0-2 year-old experience at a child-care center, such as a 0-3 year-old county or state program, or a day care program. The timeframe shall be flexible, but document at least 3 visits totaling 8 hours. A reflective paper must be written on such an experience and included in Standard 9 of the portfolio.   • Completion of a 2 credit web-based course (SPED 609 EC), which will address DPI EC content standards. Cost per credit is based upon the current cohort group.
  • Student teaching for an additional semester in an EC and an elementary (grades K-3) setting. The timeframe will be 6-9 weeks during the semester in a flexible setting, subject to approval by the field supervisor. Cost for student teaching will be based upon the current cohort group.
  • Attendance at a weekend EC assessment workshop offered at least yearly, at a cost of approximately $100.
  • Submission of the additions, deletions, and reflections to the final portfolio for each standard from the EC coursework and student teaching experience to the 10 SPED office for review. A cost of $250 will be charged for review, suggestions and final approval of the document.
  • A cost of $50 for the final review and approval of the portfolio by the certification agent. The student will be responsible for including the current fee for the additional license.
  • Completion of the Praxis II in Early Childhood (0014) with a score of 147 or better.
